![]() ![]() ![]() Just when I thought Acatl had found out “whodunit” and we were nearing the conclusion, I realized we weren’t even past the halfway point! The murder mystery, while integral, is in fact the tip of an iceberg that proves to be more of a test of Acatl’s mettle than anyone could have suspected. This is a fairly long and involved book, with a lot of machinations behind the main mystery. ![]() Indeed, given its primary setting of Tenochtitlan, this is actually an historical urban fantasy mystery.Īll this genre blending might sound like a recipe for disaster, but in de Bodard’s capable hands it makes for a great story. And rather than making this a straight-up historical mystery, like the fantastic Falco series by Lindsey Davis, de Bodard includes some magic in her mystery. As a long-lived emperor under whom the Mexica have prospered lies on his deathbed, Acatl, a priest of the dead, finds himself investigating a murder or abduction where his estranged brother is the prime suspect. Aliette de Bodard has created a mystery set in the Mexica (Aztec) Empire in 1480. There are more than enough terrors to be found there but such terrors are not all there is to the outside.” I am not here claiming that the outside is always beneficent. This fascination usually involves a certain apprehension, perhaps even dread - but it would be wrong to say that the weird and the eerie are necessarily terrifying. It has, rather, to do with a fascination for the outside, for that which lies beyond standard perception, cognition and experience. “The allure that the weird and the eerie possess is not captured by the idea that we “enjoy what scares us”. His work exemplifies like no other Mark Fisher’s understanding for the pull and attraction of Lovecraftian fiction: Campbell I must pause, take a deep breath, and then, thus braced, I may enter his contribution. "Joanna Shupe is the queen of historical bad boys!" - Julia Quinn By beloved USA Today bestselling author Joanna Shupe, the third installment in the Fifth Avenue Rebels series about an arranged engagement destined for disaster. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Throughout the book, there is a tangible point of reference that informs the whole study: Pakistan’s foundational identity as a would-be cradle of “Islamic modernism.” The latter is a broad category that refers loosely to the kinds of religion held to by a range of Pakistani intellectuals and the governing elite, who have aspired to formulate a form of Islam defined by a particular progressive “ethic” or “spirit” that is responsive to changing conditions. In doing so, he produces a rich intellectual history, focusing upon a range of Muslim thinkers and figureheads who inhabit the religious landscape of Pakistan and situating their formulations of Islam within Pakistan’s evolving social and political topography. Trying to elucidate a subject so broad and complex is a feat so ambitious that no previous author has attempted it, and Zaman tries to make sense of this complex panorama through a series of densely detailed chapters. How can Islam in Pakistan, with its overwhelming heterogeneity, be discussed meaningfully within a single study, if indeed it can be defined as a coherent enquiry at all? These are the questions hinted at by Muhammad Qasim Zaman in the early pages of this encyclopedic work.
